Frequently Asked Questions
What is pelvic floor therapy?
Pelvic Floor Therapy is a type of Physical Therapy that focuses on pain and issues related to the pelvis and pelvic floor muscles. This can include, but is not limited to, pelvic pain, incontinence, abdominal or pelvic floor surgery care pre- and post-operatively, and more. Treatment sessions can include hands-on manual techniques to decrease pain, strengthening, stretching, breathing techniques, and patient education to improve function and daily life.
What should I expect during my first visit?
Much like a traditional Physical Therapy Evaluation, this first visit is all about getting to know you and learning more about what concerns you have regarding your pelvic floor pain and function. Your evaluating therapist will discuss your medical history, presentation of pain or symptoms, and perform a screening that can include range of motion and strength. This initial visit may also include an internal assessment if appropriate and only if the patient feels comfortable to do so. Read more below about internal exams and what to expect from your Pelvic Floor Therapy.
Is there an internal exam? Is it required?
Pelvic health physical therapy sometimes involves internal examination and/or treatment; however, they are never required. The purpose of these techniques are to provide information and help address concerns such as pelvic pain, incontinence, prolapse, and muscle dysfunction. Your comfort, dignity, and autonomy are our highest priorities. Internal examination or treatment will only be performed with your explicit consent.
What does an internal assessment involve?
A gloved, lubricated finger may be inserted into the vagina to assess muscle tone, strength, coordination, and function. Gentle manual techniques may be used to release tension, improve mobility, or support muscle activation. You will be covered appropriately, and only the area being assessed/treated will be exposed.
How frequently will I have to come in for visits?
Frequency of visits is decided on a case-by-case basis with your evaluating therapist. Multiple factors including time, budget, and your current symptoms, can play a role in this decision!
Am I able to submit to my insurance for reimbursement?
Yes! After your treatment, we automatically send a “Superbill” that outlines your necessary treatment codes and required information. From there, you can contact your insurance company regarding where to submit the necessary documentation and fill out the required claim forms.
This is my first time doing pelvic floor therapy. How can I prepare?
This FAQ page is a great place to start. As for how to prepare, simply showing up is step one. Wear clothes you feel comfortable moving in, and if you want some support, perhaps you’d like to opt for bringing a partner or loved one along. Pelvic Floor Therapy can be nerve-racking, but know that you are in the driver’s seat!
Is Pelvic Floor therapy painful?
Pelvic floor therapy is not meant to be painful. If this is your first time in any type of Physical Therapy, muscles that are irritated or tight can be uncomfortable to touch. Manual therapy techniques, such as soft tissue massage or mobilization, are used to help promote healing for muscles that need some extra attention. While soreness and slight discomfort can occur, “no pain, no gain” does not apply. Chat with your therapist if things feel too intense or if you have concerns.
What should I wear to my appointment?
Whatever you feel comfortable moving in! Like any Physical Therapy appointment, there will be some movement involved in addition to manual therapy techniques such as stretching and soft tissue mobilization. Comfort is key.
Can I still come in for my appointment if I am on my period?
Yes! No matter where you are in your cycle, treatment can be modified to accommodate.
